UNLV Educational Outreach Builds Virtual High School

"UNLV is teaming with the Department of Defense Education Activity Agency (DoDEA) to create the Virtual High School curriculum for the agency's more than 95,000 students. DoDEA serves children of active armed forces members and civilians stationed at military bases all over the world.

As part of a $6.2 million contract from the DoDEA, the UNLV Division of Educational Outreach is designing courses to meet the unique needs of these students, who often change schools or whose parents are stationed at a base without access to traditional schools."

UNLV to Hold Memorial Service for Dr. Richard C. Lee

A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Dr. Richard C. Lee, former Vice Provost for the Division of Educational Outreach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Monday, September 14th, at 3pm. The service will be held at the UNLV Paradise Campus, 851 Tropicana Ave., in room 133.

Bittersweet. That's how the staff at Educational Outreach feel about the departure of our Director of Administration and Budget, E.G. Phillips. Today is E.G.'s final day with our team. He starts a new life in the Federal Court system in Missouri tomorrow. Luckily for him, it's not as an inmate but as an Administrative Manager. We wish him the best of luck in his new position!

UWW To Honor Dr. Richard Lee

Before his tenure at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Richard Lee served as a Dean at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. The UWW campus is planning a memorial event for Dr. Lee. Per The Whitewater Banner web site:

UWW Memorial Event: Tuesday, 26 May (2:00p – 4:00p) University Center Ballroom, Room 275 - A Celebration of the Life and Times of Richard C. Lee A program will be scheduled for 2:45p. (If you have a special desire to say something at this event, please Email stonej@uww.edu Those wishing to contribute items (i.e., special memories, great moments, funny Richardisms, etc.) to a memory book/board (to be displayed at the event) can forward the information to Sally Lange langes@uww.edu. Photos, also, would be welcome.

A memorial fund has been established on campus. The intention is to create a scholarship fund in Richard’s name that will be awarded annually to a wheelchair basketball player. (Richard loved basketball, and his support of the UWW Wheelchair team was rabid.) Checks can be made out to UW-Whitewater Foundation (put “Richard Lee Scholarship Fund” in the subject line.) Donations can be made at the memorial event on campus on the 26th.

A UNLV scholarship fund will be established in Richard's name. Also, late this summer or early this fall there will be a memorial service on the UNLV campus. We will post details about both endeavors as they become available.

O Captain My Captain, We'll Miss You

At 4:30 am PST, we lost our dear leader, Dr. Richard C. Lee. UNLV's official notification email:

It is with great sadness that the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost announces the passing of Richard Lee, Vice Provost for Educational Outreach early this morning. In his five years here at UNLV he led Educational Outreach to build the largest distance education, continuing education and summer programs in our state. Known for his vision and innovation, Richard was a selfless advocate of better learning and scholarship for our faculty and students. We will all miss him greatly, and we will have the chance to come together soon to celebrate his life and accomplishments at a campus memorial service.

Richard was more than our Vice Provost. He was our protector, our advocate and for many of us, our inspiration. He believed in our potential as a division within the university and he believed in our potential as individuals. We're devastated by his loss and at the same time, we're committed to honor his memory by meeting his goals for us as a unit and as individuals.

PR Info Night a Success!

Over 20 people attended the Spring 2009 Public Relations Information Night. Attendees included outgoing Program Coordinator and Founder Dick Benoit, Publicity Writer April Reckling, Program Instructors John Hanks and Leonora Kaplan and recent Certificate Recipient, Mary Polidoro. Program requirements, benefits, and format were discussed in detail. Perspective students were given the opportunity to learn more about this popular program as well as meet individually with instructors.

It Snows In Paradise!

Holiday Wishes and Hours

On behalf of the staff, students and instructors at UNLV's Educational Outreach, we would like to offer you sincere warm wishes this holiday season.

We hope you have as much fun as we did at our annual holiday luncheon!

Our office will be open over the holidays; however we will have limited staffing on hand and therefore limited services available. From December 22nd through January 2nd, we will be open from 8am to 5pm with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years Day. We will return to full staffing and operations on Monday, January 5th. Please have a safe, peaceful, and happy holiday season!

Through rain, sleet, and the threat of snow, EO Staffers pledge to let nothing stop them from offering exceptional educational experiences!

The day started off ominously. After heeding week-long warnings from the weather forecasters, staffers arrived to work early to make sure they beat the rush hour gridlock brought on by seldom seen rain and for some in the valley, snow. Unfortunately, they arrived to an ice box since the heat had not yet been turned on for the winter.

By Noon, staffers had spent hours huddled over personal space heaters (the few that did not blow a fuse) and drank enough coffee to raise Starbuck's stock price. A loud explosion erupted from the boiler room at 1 and by 1:30 the fire alarm was screaming at everyone to vacate the building as quickly as possible. Some of us grabbed purses, jackets, and cell phones and headed to the rear of the building while others were smart and headed to the front of the building where coverage from the elements was more abundant. Even shivering, staffers laughed about the absurdity of it all and one coordinator wondered if we shouldn't look in to creating a Heating/Cooling Certificate program?
